College Life

Taunton College offers the best of both worlds: a close-knit, supportive learning environment with the independence of studying in the county town.

Discover a college where you can truly be yourself

Life here is defined by expression and connection. Whether you are developing your portfolio in the Arts House, training in our professional clinical suites, or collaborating in our digital hubs, you will find a college that champions individuality.

Being minutes from the town centre means your college life extends beyond the gates, offering a vibrant social scene alongside serious career preparation.

How is college different from school?

It’s a step up. You’ll be treated like an adult, with more freedom and responsibility.

No uniforms

Express yourself. There are no blazers or ties here (unless you need suitable PPE in a workshop!).

First-name terms

You are a student, not a pupil. You’ll likely call your teachers & tutors by their first name, building professional, adult relationships.

Manage your time

You won’t be in a classroom 9 – 5. You will have “free periods” for self-study, socialising, or grabbing a well-earned hot drink from Costa.

Specialist kit

You’ll be learning and training in real hospital wards, working garages, and professional theatres, to name a few.

Enrichment & Activities

At Taunton College, our Enrichment & Academies are how we go beyond the curriculum to develop the skills, experience, and the competitive edge employers and universities demand.

Student Support

Student Support provides the essential scaffolding that enables every learner to overcome barriersthrive academically, and prepare confidently for their next steps in life or work.

Facilities

Together, our facilities create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that supports both student development and community engagement.

Term Dates

The academic year is split into three terms: autumn, spring, and summer. Terms are separated by Christmas, Easter and the summer holidays, respectively. Each is made up of two parts, separated by week-long half term holidays.

Common Questions

Will I be in College Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm?

Unlike school, you won’t necessarily be in a classroom all day, every day. Most full-time courses are condensed into 3 or 4 days a week, giving you time for self-study, part-time work, or work experience. Your specific timetable will be confirmed when you enrol.

What if I don’t know anyone else going to this College?

This is a really common worry, but don’t panic. The first few weeks of term are designed to help everyone settle in. You will be in a tutor group with people who share your interests (because they picked the same course!), which makes making friends much easier than at school.

Can I get help with the cost of travel or equipment?

Yes. We believe money shouldn’t be a barrier to education. We offer various bursaries and financial support packages that can help cover the cost of bus passes, meals, and essential course kit for eligible students. Head to our Student Support hub for more information.

Is there parking on campus?

We encourage using public transport as on-site parking is limited, but there are public car parks nearby.
