Course Overview

This course is for learners who have completed the Level 1 in Automotive Maintenance or equivalent, or have relevant experience of the motor trade.

Topics may include:

  • Operating principles of petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles
  • Chassis systems including steering, suspension, tyres and brakes
  • Electrical systems including alternators, auxiliary systems
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and starter motors.

Assessment Methods

This qualification is achieved by demonstrating that you are both practically and theorectically competent. Your practical evidence will be developed in the College’s fantastic workshops throughout the year, and by working in a garage on work experience.

You will be assessed via online examinations throughout the year, which count toward your final qualification.

Progression Options

On successful completion, you could progress to the Level 3 Maintenance and Repair Diploma, study an apprenticeship (subject to an initial assessment and suitable employment in a garage), or another course of your choice (subject to a successful interview).

Alternatively, you could find employment in the Automotive industry at fast fit level.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 2 range, including English and maths. Experience with motor vehicles is essential, whether a Level 1 in Automotive Maintenance at Merit grade or above, or a Level 1 in Vehicle Accident Repair at Merit grade or above.

You will be invited to attend an informal discussion to assess your suitability for the course.

You will need safety boots and overalls which can be purchased during enrolment if required.
