Course Overview

This course is delivered at University Centre Somerset, for more information please visit www.somerset.ac.uk

This course is designed for individuals with or without prior experience working with children. It allows students to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills through class-based learning and placements. The course is mapped against QAA benchmarks for Early Childhood degrees and includes practical assessments, allowing graduates to earn a BA (Hons) degree at Level 6, which is counted as full and relevant at Level 3 by the DfE. This qualifies graduates to work as a practitioner in any Ofsted-registered setting. Additionally, students have the optional opportunity to be assessed against the new Graduate Practitioner Competencies, which provides an extra certificate upon successful completion.

Topics may include:

  • The Inquiring Practitioner
  • Leadership and Management
  • Social Pedagogy
  • Dissertation

Assessment Methods

The programme does not have exams. Instead, each module is assessed through assignments, which may include reflective essays, the development of learning resources, and presentations. Assessments are often linked to practical work, and placement/work weeks are a crucial part of the learning process.

Progression Options

Upon graduation, students can find employment in various early years settings, such as children’s centres, primary schools, or as an early years practitioner. The degree can also lead to management and leadership roles. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate qualifications like a PGCE or Masters degrees.

Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of 80 UCAS points from a full Level 3 qualification.
  • At least four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and math, or a Level 2 equivalent.
