Course Overview

This course is for those interested in working in post-16 education and training such as colleges, private training providers or training within their own workplace. This course is for you if:

  • you work with trainees in a classroom or workshop but do not have a teaching qualification
  • you are involved in any activity with learners where you are teaching them or helping them acquire skills or knowledge
  • you wish to deliver and/or assess on a course where a Level 3 teaching qualification is required
  • you may not be involved in any of the above activities but are considering them for the future.

The course content is very flexible and you will be encouraged to focus on your own specialist area so that everything you do meets your own needs.

You will learn fundamentals of effective teaching, learning and assessment. The five main areas are:

  • The teaching/training role and its responsibilities and demands
  • Establishing and meeting your learners’ needs, including consideration of the main principles involved, how you overcome any barriers to learning and how you achieve a positive learning environment
  • Planning and delivering effective sessions
  • Assessing your learners and ensuring that the feedback process is effective
  • Practical teaching.

Assessment Methods

There will be a series of tasks throughout the course. Some are written, some involve collaborative activities with your peers. All are directly related to your own context.

There will be a practical assesssment (micro-teach) towards the end of the course.

Progression Options

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training qualification is a useful qualification in its own right, but you may decide to go on to a Level 4 Certificate, Level 5 Diploma or the PGCE in Further Education and Skills, taught at University Centre Somerset. We can advise on the best route.

Entry Requirements

There are no prerequisites or formal entry requirements for this course. The course is open to anyone who wants to learn the principles and practice of effective teaching and training.
