Course Overview

This course is for learners who have completed a Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair programme or equivalent (such as a Automotive Care Diploma), or have good experience of the motor vehicle trade.

Topics may include:

  • Diagostics and rectification of automotive auxiliary electrical faults
  • Diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle engine faults, chassis, transmission, and driveline faults
  • Understanding the operating principals of multiple sensors and actuators on the vehicles systems
  • Multiplex wiring systems
  • Low carbon fuelled vehicle systems that include hydrogen, fuel cells, and battery power
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • Inspecting light vehicles using prescribed methods.

Assessment Methods

The qualification is achieved by demonstrating that you are both practically and theoretically competent. Your practical evidence will be developed in the College’s fantastic workshops throughout the year and by working in a garage whilst on work experience.

You will also be assessed via online examinations throughout the year, which count toward your final qualification. You will also be expected to complete work experience in a relevant placement.

Progression Options

You could progress to an apprenticeship programme (subject to initial assessment and suitable employment in a garage) or employment within the automotive industry.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range including maths and English, or an appropriate Level 2 qualification with Merit grade. You will be invited to attend an informal discussion to assess your suitability for the course.

You will need safety boots and overalls which can be purchased during enrolment, if required.
