Course Overview

As a team leader, you should be in a first line management role, with operational/project responsibilities or responsibility for managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome.

The broad purpose of the occupation is a team leader role, with operational and project responsibilities. They will have responsibility for managing individuals, a team, or elements of a project. They provide direction, instructions, and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals. Team leaders are vital for the smooth functioning of all departments in any organisation and are often responsible for ensuring the function is correctly administered and maintained in line with legislation of the organisation’s procedures.

Key responsibilities are likely to include supporting, managing, and developing individuals, managing projects, planning, and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems, and building relationships internally and externally.

Roles/Occupations may include: Supervisor, Team Leader, Project Lead, Shift Supervisor, and Duty Lead.

The apprenticeship standard covers a wide range of management skills and knowledge, including organisational performance, interpersonal skills, and personal effectiveness.

Topics may include:

  • Leading, managing and developing the team
  • Managing resources to deliver tasks within budget and targets
  • Contributing to change and supporting others through change
  • Collaborating and building relationships with stakeholders
  • Facilitating cross-team working
  • Data management
  • Information-based decision making
  • Contributing to projects
  • Communicating information to drive operational activities and to improve organisational performance
  • Supporting sustainable operational planning.

On-campus sessions take place once every third Wednesday at our Taunton College. Apprenticeship reviews will take place every 6 – 8 weeks, and must be attended by you, and your manager.

A requirement of the apprenticeship is that employer commits to you, the learner, spending a minimum of 6 hours of your working week developing and learning, which is logged as ‘Off the Job’ training. The recommendation is to protect 1 day per week (or 20% of the working week) to complete work on set research tasks and assignments, which contribute to your learning portfolio on the weeks when you are not attending college.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is through:

  • Attendance at planned sessions at Taunton College which will take place on Wednesdays in accordance with the learning journey
  • Regular progress reviews and assessment feedback (involving your employer and Taunton College)
  • Creation of a portfolio demonstrating learning and development activities within the workplace, underpinned by research and learning activities using CMi Management Direct.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will work towards the End Point Assessment (EPA) which will include:

  • Professional discussion, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
  • Project proposal, presentation and questioning.

Progression Options

On completion, apprentices may choose to register as Associate members with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management, to support their professional career development and progression.

You may consider progression to the Level 5 Operations Manager Apprenticeship Standard.

Entry Requirements

You must be in a relevant team leader role within your organisation in order to undertake this apprenticeship so that competence can be assessed using the expected skills, behaviours and knowledge.

You should also hold a Level 2 in English and maths (or equivalent).
