Course Overview

This course is designed for those who wish to develop their understanding of the safe handling of medicines. You may wish to access this training with a view to progress on to further qualifications or study this programme to complement other programmes.

As part of the course you will study four mandatory units:

UNIT 1 – Understand medication and prescriptions

  • Section 1 Understand the use of different types of medication
  • Section 2 Understand how medicines are classified
  • Section 3 Understand legislation and guidelines related to medication
  • Section 4 Understand the roles of self and others in the medication process
  • Section 5 Know how to access information about medication

UNIT 2 – Supply, storage and disposal of medication

  • Section 1 Understand how medicines are supplied and obtained
  • Section 2 Know the requirements for storing medication
  • Section 3 Understand the requirements for the safe disposal of medication

UNIT 3 – Understand the requirements for the safe administration of medication

  • Section 1 Understand the legislation and guidance in relation to administration of medication
  • Section 2 Understand the preparations to be taken prior to administering medication
  • Section 3 Understand how medication is administered safely and in away that meets individual needs
  • Section 4 Understand how to support individuals to administer their own medication
  • Section 5 Understand the procedures to follow when there are problems with the administration of medication
  • Section 6 Understand how the effects of medication are monitored

UNIT 4 – Record keeping and audit processes for medication

  • Section 1 Understand the audit process in relation to medication transactions and stock levels
  • Section 2 Understand how information is recorded and confidentially maintained
  • Section 3 Understand own role in relation to accountability and responsibility
  • Section 4 Understand the importance of safeguarding individuals in relation to medication use

Assessment Methods

Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence of learning. A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studied.
