Course Overview
This practical ceramics course introduces learners to contemporary and traditional ceramic practice through two tutor-led projects. Students will investigate historical and contemporary ceramic artists whilst developing practical making skills using hand-building, wheel throwing, surface decoration and glazing techniques.
The course encourages creative exploration, independent thinking and reflective practice. Throughout the programme learners will maintain a sketchbook, complete artist research, document experimentation and evaluate their own progress in preparation for assessment against the UAL Level 2 Award grading criteria.
Continuous formative assessment, one-to-one tutorials and group critiques will support learners throughout the course. The projects will culminate in a public exhibition and the second in a final assessed body of work.
Topics may include:
- Developing confidence using ceramic materials safely
- Investigating contemporary and historial ceramic practice
- Development of technical skills in pinch pots, coil building, slab construction, joining techniques, surface texture, slip decoration, underglazes, oxides, glazing and wheel throwing
- Production of developmental sketchbooks
- Development of independent creative ideas
- Presentation of finished ceramic work professionally.
Please note: there may be additional costs to cover art materials and a sketchbook.
Assessment Methods
Assessment is through coursework assessed at the College and moderated externally by the University of the Arts London (UAL).
Progression Options
You could progress to a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design.
Entry Requirements
You will need some experience in ceramics as well as the ability to research and generate ideas towards a qualification. Knowledge of IT is useful for uploading photographs of coursework etc.
