This qualification aims to increase your knowledge and awareness of children and young people’s mental health. By completing the qualification, you will develop knowledge of mental health in children and young people which would support progression onto further qualifications and into relevant employment in the health and social care or education sectors.
Unit 1 – Understanding children and young people’s mental health in context
- The concept of mental health
- The legislation and guidance that applies to children and young people’s mental health
- How society views mental health.
Unit 2 – Understanding factors which may affect children and young people’s mental health
- Risk factors which may affect the mental wellbeing of children and young people
- The potential effects of puberty and developmental changes on the mental health of children and young people
- Understand how abuse or bullying may affect the mental health of a child or young person.
Unit 3 – Understanding children and young people’s mental health concerns
- Behaviour that is associated with mental health concerns in children and young people
- Stress and anxiety in children and young people
- Depression in children and young people
- Specific mental health conditions that children and young people may experience.
Unit 4 – Understanding the impact of children and young people’s mental health concerns
- The impact mental health concerns can have on children and young people
- The impact of children and young people’s mental health problems on others
- The importance of being diagnosed with a mental health problem.
Unit 5 – Understand how to support children and young people with mental health concerns
- Person-centred approaches to supporting children and young people with mental health concerns
- How to promote mental wellbeing in children and young people
- Services and treatment involved with children and young people’s mental health.
Assessment Methods
Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence of learning. A certificate will be awareded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studied.

We will seek to equip all our students with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively, and independently in life and work. All students have the opportunity to meet with a Careers Advisor for 1:1 career support.
The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.
We provide top-quality workshops and teaching areas across our Colleges for subjects such as art, design and media, hair and beauty, catering, automotive engineering and construction. You can review our campus facilities by navigating to the “College Life” section of our websites.
