Course Overview

The Level 2 Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship is designed to develop confident and competent coaches who can plan, deliver and review inclusive physical activity and sport sessions within community settings.

Typically completed over 12–14 months, including end-point assessment, the apprenticeship is delivered through a blended learning approach that combines workplace coaching, workplace learning, online learning and independent studyIt is suitable for individuals working or schools, clubs, leisure centres, charities or community organisations who are passionate about increasing participation and improving health, wellbeing and social inclusion.

Apprentices develop essential knowledge of physical activity principles, safeguarding, health and safety, equality and diversity, and the factors that influence participation, alongside practical coaching skills such as session planning, communication, motivation and evaluation. The apprenticeship also emphasises professional behaviours, including enthusiasm, reliability, empathy and reflective practice.

Competence is assessed through a practical observation in the workplace and a professional discussion supported by a portfolio of evidence. On completion, apprentices are well prepared for employment as community activator coaches and for progression to higher-level coaching or sport and physical activity roles or higher level training such as Level 4 Sports Coach apprenticeship.

Topics may include:

  • Planning, delivering, adapting and reviewing sport and physical activity sessions that encourage individual and community participation while managing participants’ behaviour
  • How to engage individuals and local communities to participate in sport and physical activity
  • How to promote safeguarding the public’s health and wellbeing
  • Understanding and demonstrating a positive attitude, role-modelling positive behaviours, and building a rapport with individuals and communities from a variety of backgrounds
  • Developing a variety of approaches to promote the benefits of participating in sport and physical activity.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is through on-programme learning, including a blend of online learning and in-workplace learning, and units of study with a variety of assessment tasks to complete.

Final assessment will be at End Point Assessment (EPA) which will comprise of a workplace coaching observation with questions, and a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

Progression Options

On completion, apprentices are prepared for employment as community activator coaches. Alternatively, you could continue working towards the Level 4 Sports Coach apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

You will need GCSEs in the 9 to 2 (A* to E) range. Course entry is subject to a successful interview.
