Course Overview

You will gain knowledge of coding which can support progression into further study in programming or other topics within the digital sector.
The aims and objectives of this qualification would be gaining an understanding of the following topics:
- Principles of coding
- The stages of the software development cycle
- Coding terminology and the key principles of writing code
- Different coding types
- Best practices in coding
- Methods of testing and the DevOps process
- Effective communication and project management in coding.
You will study the following mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Understanding the principles of coding
You will gain knowledge of coding languages and the software development lifecycle, you will also learn about the job roles, functions and key skills requirements of a coding professional.
Unit 2 – Understanding terminology used in coding
You will gain basic computer terminology in relation to coding. You will also learn about coding acronyms, terminology, and the key principles of writing code.
Unit 3 – Understanding coding design principles
You will gain knowledge of different coding types and the advantages and disadvantages of their use. You will also understand the use of pure function.
Unit 4 – Understanding the processes and practice of coding
You will learn best practice in coding, methods of testing used, and DevOps processes.
Unit 5 – Understanding the importance of communication and project management in coding
You will learn the importance of communication for those working in a coding environment. You will also learn about project management principles and Agile development.
Assessment Methods
Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence of learning. A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studied.
Progression Options
You could progess to a relevant Level 3 programme in Programming, Coding or other digital-related professions.

All students have the opportunity to meet with a Careers Advisor for 1:1 career support.
The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.
