Course Overview

This qualification is designed to increase learners’ awareness and understanding of domestic abuse and its impact. The need for education and training across sectors to enable identification of abuse, allocation of support and referral is a recurring theme within regional domestic abuse strategies.
Awareness of domestic abuse and its impact is important for those working in a wide range of sectors such as healthcare, social care, childcare, education, and housing. There is a need to understand the issues, report on those who may be at risk and support signposting to relevant services.
The learner will study 4 mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Understanding domestic abuse
- The term ‘domestic abuse’
- Know the prevalence of domestic abuse
- Misconceptions surrounding domestic abuse
- How national policy and strategy in relation to domestic abuse has changed over time.
Unit 2 – Understanding the signs and risk factors associated with domestic abuse
- Signs of domestic abuse
- Factors that may contribute to the risk of domestic abuse
- Why domestic abuse is not always disclosed or reported.
Unit 3 – Understanding the impact of domestic abuse
- The impact of domestic abuse on an individual, children, and family members
- Transition in domestic abuse
- The economic and social cost of domestic abuse.
Unit 4 – Understanding policy, response and intervention in relation to domestic abuse
- Legislation and government responses to domestic abuse
- How to respond if domestic abuse or harm is disclosed, suspected, or alleged
- The support available to survivors of domestic abuse
- How to access support services available to those experiencing domestic abuse
- Potential barriers to accessing information and support
- The importance of multi-agency approaches in relation to domestic abuse
- Ways to reduce the likelihood of domestic abuse
- Support available to perpetrators of domestic abuse.
Assessment Methods
Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence of learning. A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studied.

All students have the opportunity to meet with a Careers Advisor for 1:1 career support.
The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.

All of our students will have a personal tutor to support them with their academic progress and personal development. The tutorial programme consists of 1:1 support, group tutorials and guest speakers, plus targeted online resources which complement the UCS College Group Advantage scheme.
