The Level 5 Assistant Practitioner (Health) apprenticeship is an exciting two-year programme designed for individuals ready to take the next step in their healthcare career. This programme provides the perfect platform for career progression in a range of healthcare disciplines and students will be awarded a Level 5 Foundation Degree upon completion.
This programme is delivered on one set day per week at University Centre Somerset, Taunton Campus. Assistant practitioners will also evidence 660 hours of clinical learning which can be undertaken in their base role alongside student led placement activity.
Pathways Available
All pathways are delivered over two years and enrolments take place in March:
- Mental Health
You will explore mental health across the lifespan, including early intervention, crisis support, and long-term management. The course places strong emphasis on communication, safeguarding, and reducing stigma. - Health & Social Care (generic route)
You will develop the skills to deliver high-quality, person-centred care while working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams. The course emphasises communication, holistic assessment, and promoting independence and wellbeing. - Occupational Therapy
You will work alongside occupational therapists to enable people to maintain independence and participate in meaningful activities. The course explores rehabilitation, adaptive strategies, and the use of therapeutic interventions.
- Diagnostic Radiography
You will develop knowledge of imaging techniques such as X-ray and other modalities, alongside a strong focus on patient care and safety. You will play an important role in preparing and supporting patients through imaging procedures.
- Physiotherapy
You will develop practical skills in rehabilitation, exercise programmes and mobility support. The course combines theory with hands-on application, enabling you to contribute to treatment plans and support individuals in achieving their physical goals.
Topics may include:
- Year one: communication, anatomy and physiology, sociology and psychology, and risk management.
- Year two: leadership and management, professional development, enquiry methods, and professional assessment.
Assessment Methods
During the course, you will be assessed through written assignments and presentations. You will also complete a practice assessment document (PAD) in both years. At the end of the course, you will undertake an end point assessment (EPA), which includes an observation and professional discussion.
Progression Options
Each pathway is structured to offer a clear route into further professional qualifications. Whether you’re aiming for a full degree apprenticeship or a direct-entry university programme, our Assistant Practitioner programme supports a 2+2 progression model; two years as an AP, followed by a two-year degree apprenticeship (where applicable).
UCS currently offers:
- Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship (RNDA) – Adult and Mental Health pathways
- Occupational Therapy Degree Apprenticeship – launching in 2026/27
Our programmes are aligned with degree progression at University Centre Somerset and our partners at UWE Bristol, although progression to other institutions may also be possible (though not yet tested). The Health & Social Care pathway is a flexible, generic route designed to align specifically with UCS nursing programmes.

We aim to offer a careers service that is accessible to everyone. We will seek to equip all our students with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively, and independently in life and work. All students have the opportunity to meet with a Careers Advisor for 1:1 career support.
The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.

All of our students will have a personal tutor to support them with their academic progress and personal development. The tutorial programme consists of 1:1 support, group tutorials and guest speakers, plus targeted online resources which complement the UCS College Group Advantage scheme.
