This qualification aims to introduce knowledge around communication, equality, diversity and inclusion, personal development, role of the social care worker, handling information, health and safety, safeguarding, duty of care and person-centred approaches.
As part of this course you will study nine mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Principles of communication in adult social care settings
- Why effective communication is important in adult social care settings
- How to meet the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of an individual
- How to overcome barriers to communication
- Principles and practices relating to confidentiality
Unit 2 – Principles of personal development in adult social care settings
- How to reflect on practice in adult social care
- The importance of feedback in improving own practice
- How a personal development plan can contribute to own learning and development.
Unit 3 – Principles of diversity, equality and inclusion in adult social care settings
- The importance of diversity, equality and inclusion
- How to work in an inclusive way
- How to raise awareness of diversity, equality and inclusion.
Unit 4 – Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
- How to recognise signs of abuse
- How to respond to suspected or alleged abuse
- The national and local context of safe guarding and protection from abuse
- Understand ways to reduce the likelihood of abuse
- How to recognise and report unsafe practices
Unit 5 – Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
- How duty of care contributes to safe practice
- How to address conflicts or dilemmas that may arise between an individual’s rights and the duty of care
- How to respond to complaints.
Unit 6 – Understand the role of the social care worker
- Working relationships in social care settings
- The importance of working in ways that are agreed with the employer
- The importance of working in partnership with others.
Unit 7 – Understand person-centred approaches in adult social care settings
- Understand person-centred approaches in adult social care
- How to implement a person-centred approach in adult social care setting
- The importance of establishing consent when providing care or support
- How to implement and promote active participation
- How to support an individual’s right to make choices
- How to promote an individual’s wellbeing

Unit 8 – Understanding health and safety in social care settings
- The different responsibilities relating to health and safety in social care setting
- Risk assessments and their importance in relation to health and safety
- Procedures for responding to accidents and sudden illness
- How to reduce the spread of infection
- How to move and handle equipment and other objects safely
- The principles of assisting and moving an individual
- How to handle hazardous substances
- How to promote environmental safety procedures in the social care setting
- How to manage stress
- Procedures regarding handling medication
- How to handle and store food safely.
UNIT 9 – Understand how to handle information in social care settings
- Requirements for handling information in social care settings
- Understand good practice in handling information in a social care setting.
Assessment Methods
Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence of learning. A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studied.

All students have the opportunity to meet with a Careers Advisor for 1:1 career support.
The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.
We provide top-quality workshops and teaching areas across our Colleges for subjects such as art, design and media, hair and beauty, catering, automotive engineering and construction. You can review our campus facilities by navigating to the “College Life” section of our websites.

All of our students will have a personal tutor to support them with their academic progress and personal development. The tutorial programme consists of 1:1 support, group tutorials and guest speakers, plus targeted online resources which complement the UCS College Group Advantage scheme.
