Course Overview

This qualification is designed for learners who want to increase their knowledge and understanding of autism. Successful completion of this qualification will allow learners to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of autism, which would support progression onto appropriate qualifications and into employment within the health and social care sector.
As part of this course you will study six mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Understanding Autism
- The historical context of autism
- The diagnosis and characteristics of autism
- The legislative framework applicable to autism
- How autism is represented in society.
Unit 2 – Positive behavioural support for individuals with autism
- Understanding behaviour within the context of autism
- How to promote an autism-friendly environment
- How to promote individual positive behavioural support
- The interventions used in behaviour support.
Unit 3 – Understand support and management of transitions for individuals with autism
- How transitions can affect people with autism
- How to support young people with autism to make the transition into adulthood
- How to support individuals with autism into employment.
Unit 4 – Therapeutic intervention and support available for individuals with autism and co-occurring conditions
- The range of therapeutic interventions available to individuals with autism
- The services available to individuals with autism and their families
- Understand co-occurring conditions and their treatment
Unit 5 – Communication and social interaction with individuals with autism
- The differences in social interaction and communication associated with autism
- How our own communication can be adapted to support positive interactions and communication with individuals with autism
- A range of strategies and aids used to support communication and social interaction for individuals with autism.
Unit 6 – Safeguarding and resilience in autism
- How to raise concerns about potential or actual harm, abuse or exploitation
- How to support the health, safety and wellbeing of individuals
- How the legislative framework safeguards children, young people, and adults with autism
- How and when restrictive practices might be used within legal guidelines.
Assessment Methods
Assessments are due at the end of each unit. Your tutor will assess your work and build up your portfolio of evidence of learning.
A certificate will be awarded on satisfactory submission of evidence of learning for the units studies.

All students have the opportunity to meet with a Careers Advisor for 1:1 career support.
The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.

All of our students will have a personal tutor to support them with their academic progress and personal development. The tutorial programme consists of 1:1 support, group tutorials and guest speakers, plus targeted online resources which complement the UCS College Group Advantage scheme.
